This chart shows the status of pledged delegates in the Democratic race effective 3 June 2008. Sen. Barrack Obama leads Sen. Hillary Clinton; he has 51.69 percent (1,762.5 to 1636.5) of the pledged delegates. A candidate needs 2,117 2,026 delegates to capture the nomination (DNC reinstated 150 delegates for Florida and Michigan on 31 May). The super-delegates will decide the nomination.
The Democratic Party has two types of delegates: pledged delegates, based on the vote in primaries and caucuses, and unpledged delegates, otherwise known as superdelegates.
Pledged delegates are "pledged" to cast their vote for their candidate on the first round of voting at the convention. If no candidate wins on the first round, they are freed to vote their conscience. Pledged delegates are usually state and local party activists.
Unpledged, or super, delegates, are not bound by the primary or caucus vote. They are elected, or formerly elected, Democratic officeholders at the federal or statewide level.
